Dovercourt is a mature neighbourhood located in Northwest Edmonton. Though the City of Edmonton annexed Dovercourt and the surrounding areas in the early 1900s, the community remained largely undeveloped until the 1950s. Following the Second World War, Edmonton saw an increased demand for affordable, family-friendly homes, which quickly began cropping up around the neighbourhood. Like many communities at the time, Dovercourt was planned as a “neighbourhood unit” under town planner Noel Dant. This now-popular unit design concept was one of the first of its kind in North America.
Did you know? The “neighbourhood unit” design concept seeks to discourage traffic and promote community attractiveness. This is achieved through curvilinear street patterns, limited access points and a focus on centrally located schools, community facilities and park space.
