Canossa in Northwest Edmonton

Canossa is a newer neighbourhood located in far Northwest Edmonton. First established in the early 2000s, it is one of several communities making up the larger Castle Downs district. Characterized by quiet cul-de-sacs, open green spaces, spacious single-family homes and proximity to amenities, Canossa is a popular choice among families looking for a great place to grow.

Accessible Amenities

There are few businesses in Canossa, which serves to minimize traffic to the area and maintain the community’s quiet atmosphere. However, Canossa is within a short distance of several major shopping hubs, including the Newcastle Shopping Centre (grocers, medical services, banking institutions, etc.) and Albany Market Square (restaurants, big-box retailers, coffee shops and more). Additional shops and services, big-box retailers, restaurants, and more can be easily reached via nearby 127th Street and Castle Downs Road.

Canossa’s entire northern end is still under agricultural cultivation, providing residents with semi-rural views and a buffer from north Anthony Henday traffic noise. The community also houses a centrally located stormwater pond, defined by scenic walking trails. Rapperswill Castle Playground is situated nearby as is Elsinore Chambery Park. Canossa residents are currently served by the Baturyn Community League. The league hosts several family-friendly events throughout the year, including a playschool and various sports initiatives.

Commuting From Canossa

Canossa is defined by the Rapperswill (Newcastle) neighbourhood to the west, the Anthony Henday to the north, 112th Street to the east and 167th Ave to the south. Major commuter roads such as 127th Street provide a direct connection to the Henday as well as 153rd Ave, 137th Ave and Yellowhead Trail. Nearby 97th Street offers a streamlined commute to CFB Edmonton and the city centre.

There are some transit opportunities in Canossa, with several routes operating throughout the neighbourhood, particularly along 167th Ave and 112th Street. There are also several major transit centres in the area, including Castle Downs Transit CentreEaux Claires and Northgate Transit CentreEdmonton’s Metro LRT line extension will include a stop along Castle Downs Road and 153rd Ave, just 5-minutes south of Canossa.
