The land comprising Carlton was predominantly used for agricultural and industrial purposes before residential development in the 1990s. Today, Carlton is an amenity-friendly neighbourhood located in modern Northwest Edmonton. Like all homes in the Palisades, the community was named after a famous fur trade fort or post, in this case, Fort Carlton. Established by the Hudson Bay Company in 1798, Fort Carlton was located along the junction of the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers.
