There’s nothing quite like buying your first home. After months (maybe even years) of saving for a down payment, dreaming and searching, you finally have a place to call your very own. But before you rush out in search of paint colours and home décor, we recommend grabbing these first-time homeowner essentials (you’ll be glad you did)!
1) Window Treatments
Relaxing in your new home may prove difficult if you don’t have any privacy. Be sure to purchase curtains or blinds, keeping in mind which areas of your home see the most sunlight. For example, if you have an eastward facing bedroom, you may want to install heavier drapery to avoid that early morning glare.
2) New Locks
It’s common practice for new homeowners to replace the entryway locks, as the previous owners may have provided duplicate keys to friends, family or neighbours. While we’re sure they aren’t planning to let themselves in for a visit any time soon, it’s a good safety precaution.
3) A Tool Kit
Speaking of new locks, they’ll be pretty hard to install without the necessary tools (you may have a hard time hanging those blinds, too). Be sure to stock your kit with the following:
- Hammer
- Adjustable screwdriver
- Pliers
- Tape measure
- Level
- Power drill (assorted bits)
- Nails
- Screws
- Picture hooks
4) Cleaning Supplies
Unpacking often leads to cleaning. Like your tool kit, you’ll want to have a few necessary items on hand to get the job done:
- Mop and bucket
- Dish soap/ dishwasher detergent
- All-purpose cleaner (wood and glass friendly)
- Broom and dustpan/ vacuum
- Specialty cleaners as necessary (i.e. hardwood floors or glass cooktop stoves)
5) Bathroom Accessories
Unless you’re eager to try out your new mop, you’ll want to pick up a shower curtain(s) and hooks sooner rather than later. Other bathroom accessories to consider are a soap dish or pump, a toothbrush holder, bathmat, plunger and toilet scrub brush.
6) Safety Supplies
Protect yourself and your new home with a few safety essentials. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand in the kitchen and be sure install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (or replace the batteries). Lastly, keep a fully stocked home first-aid kit in the event of an emergency.
7) Lightbulbs
Avoid getting left in the dark by keeping a few lightbulbs on hand. While they may not be something you need right now, you’ll be glad to have them when you do!
8) Hangers
Like lightbulbs, hangers generally go unnoticed until they’re gone (or worst-case scenario, you don’t have any at all). See to it that you’re fully stocked as you prepare to unpack.
9) Yard Tools
While yard tools aren’t something you’ll need to worry about if you’ve opted for a low-maintenance condo, those responsible for their own exterior upkeep will need likely need to purchase a snow shovel and lawnmower. Depending on the season you may also be required to purchase additional items such as an ice chipper or gardening tools.
